Most writers have been writing since early childhood and can be found waling around on a daily basis with a story going on in their heads. I have, however, never met or worked with a writer who had only one story or idea. Writers are idea-oriented and this seems to be a non-stop process. Thank goodness! Most writers, like myself, have a feeling that they were born to write; their words constantly flow and come naturally to them.
If the above description sounds familiar, this message is for you. Maybe you’ve written a masterpiece and haven’t found the exact day and time to send it to someone who will publish it. Possibly, you have completed your manuscript and have sent it to a great many people and the outcome ended up being a rejection letter or two. Afterward, you shelved your masterpiece, thinking on another day you’d pick it back up and see what was wrong with it. Your next plan might have been to edit the manuscript yourself and resubmit it to another company. Does this sound familiar?
Chances are if you have not gotten someone to mentor you or to help you along the way, you may not get your masterpiece discovered as soon as you believe. Another choice would be to seek out an editor to help you. This is a much wiser plan. Because often when a really good editor gets his or her hands on someone else’s writing, the miracle comes about that the writer had in mind all along. The hard part is actually asking for help, knowing who to ask and then being willing to allow your written works to be changed or enhanced by another writer.
Teamwork can be a brainstorming session in writing instead of just a phrase. Teamwork on a book can mean the writer, an editor, an artist, the book designer, and the book publisher all coming together to bring about the best quality of work possible. Last and certainly not least, the printer comes in and produces the finished product… without them no one would be able to see all of your ideas come true. It is my belief that without all of these components, the miracle seldom completes itself to the ‘best seller’ stage.
There are writers who are trying to get their manuscript published and when asked if they can put together a query letter – they have no idea what that is. Others when asked to provide a list of characters do not have one. Items such as these are needed in order to be organized and thorough enough to have a best selling novel. The idea that your story is good enough without them is more antiquated than you might think.
At Entry Way Marketing and Publishing it is our standard to take a new product and afterward, do our utmost to get the product ready for a large publishing house to take their valuable time to look at the book.
To complete a manuscript and turn it into a written, published, marketed and distributed book, in the most professional and well-received manner, we like to have the following:
• At least 3 finished (edited and formatted) chapters of the manuscript
• A professionally written query letter – not just a letter that says “enclosed is”
• A list of characters for the book if appropriate – not necessary for a book of poetry
• A list of your current competitors (similar books) so that we can study your market
• Manuscripts should be presented with at least one idea for the book cover
•A chapter-by-chapter description containing one paragraph describing the idea behind each chapter of the book
• A good editor who understands your motive with your book and has previous experience in your genre
• A very well written review/press release
• Small and large ads ready to go out when the book comes out
• Flyers and business cards to hand out to get pre-orders before your book arrives
As soon as the above items have been completed and submitted by the Team, you will be well on your way to being able to quit dreaming that you’re a writer – you’ll have a book to be proud of and one that will grab the attention of even the top level book discoverers of today.
